Sleep and dreaming are often the things we think of as normal. Sleep that followed a dream also indicates we have sleep soundly. But it is really a dream to have a major effect on health.
When we fall asleep, we actually do various jobs such as when we woke up. This is because our brains are very busy collecting information and process it.
According to Robert Stickgold, a sleep researcher from Harvard Medical School, sleep is not just useful for organizing information in the brain but also ensure proper body functioning optimally.
The research revealed that while sleeping our memory will be collected so that the learning process more smoothly, stimulates the immune system so that the disease can be countered, and regulating emotions.
We can survive much longer without eating compared with no sleep, he said.
What happens when we sleep? Robert Lawrence Kuhn, author and host of Closer to Truth, says there are two main stages of sleep, i.e., REM (rapid eye movement) and non-REM.
REM sleep occurs when we experience the dreams, while non-REM sleep occurs when brain activity just a little bit and not dreaming (or can be called while we sleep).
Despite of the mystical point of view many people believe dreams have a special meaning for us, but the researchers say that dreams help human being more creative in dealing with its problems.
The dream is a creative thing. Dreams will take the basic elements, combined with the unusual ways, and produce a radical difference, unlike the real world, said Patrick McNamara, a neuroscientist from Boston University.
The experts believe, dream is a natural mechanism that helps us to experiment with alternate realities securely. The dream also help us adapt well.
We could be a doctor or a nurse, became a cowboy, and perform a variety of games, in ways that we never experienced before, said Nicholas Humphrey, psychologist.
In the theater of dreams, we can fly, fight, or have sex, in different situations, with new people, or with friends, that never occurred to us before.
